Born in the city of York but now residing in Manchester, Lewis Ross-Robson encapsulates a range of influences namely Stephen Fretwell, Michael Nau and Adrianne Lenker. Lewis' take on introspective folk is a reminder of the importance of simplicity in music, seeking to retain a delicate and distinctive essence through his sound.

Lewis makes a return to streaming services with the first of three singles, after taking a hiatus to finish his degree and further develop his sound. After three years away Lewis’ new single explores new avenues both lyrically and instrumentally. Now independent, ‘Black Again’ is the first of three singles which will be released across a span of three months, which will feature various collaborations with other independent creatives.

‘Black Again’ discusses Lewis’ feelings during a period of feeling uninspired and a burning desire to overcome bad habits during the covid period before transitioning to a positive mindset and introducing a healthier lifestyle. A reflection of his state of mind and a reminder to confront situations, especially the most difficult ones The track also references the people around him who helped during this time of uncertainty, while also emphasizing how easy it can be to fall back into those old habits.

By exploring these feelings, Lewis drew inspiration from ‘O Children’ by Nick Cave and ‘Play’ by Steven Fretwell, resonating with the overarching tone of desperation that embodies both of these tracks. This translated to the recording of ‘Black Again’, which took place at The Grand Studio in Clitheroe and added additional layers to the track in the form of his four piece band, building upon that period of transformation to create a sound that is uniquely his own.

The single is accompanied by artwork by Bridget Greenwood, an abstract landscape artist based in Cheshire. The artwork was born from a conversation between Lewis and Bridget about the songs origin and meaning, with Bridget creating a visual representation of the transformational process that Lewis endured.

Bridget aligned this physiological meaning by quoting the piece as ‘from being under water’ metaphorically. This perfectly matched the landscape based video filmed and edited by Manchester based Videographer and Photographer, Isaac Robinson.

These projects were part of a unique experiment, for-which the tracks were sent to talented creatives to create artistic pieces that blossomed from the sound of ‘Black Again’, allowing these creative individuals to develop a natural visual interpretation of Lewis’ sound.
